Thaya was awarded a Diploma in International Arbitration by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.

Thaya has experience of domestic and international arbitration. He also has experience of arbitrations governed by the laws of Malaysia and by foreign laws, for example the laws of India and Qatar. Thaya has been involved in arbitrations with a seat in Malaysia and overseas, including India and Singapore.

Thaya is familiar with all major domestic and institutional rules. Domestically, this includes the rules of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM, the institute’s acronym in Malay). Internationally, he is familiar with the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

Thaya is on the list of arbitrators of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the panel of arbitrators of the Indonesia National Board of Arbitration, the panel of arbitrators of the KLRCA, the database of neutrals of the London Court of International Arbitration and the reserve panel of arbitrators of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.

Thaya is the Vice Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Malaysia Branch. Thaya is an Asia Representative of the International Chamber of Commerce Young Arbitrators Forum (ICC YAF) , a member of the ICC Consultative Task Force on the Revision of the ADR Rules and a member of the ICC Malaysia Arbitration Committee.

Thaya is the author of the Malaysian chapter of several books on international arbitration, including Asia Arbitration Handbook published by Oxford University Press in 2011.

Thaya is on the faculty of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and tutors at the Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration, Accelerated Route to Fellowship and Introduction to International Arbitration courses.

Thaya regularly speaks at domestic and international conferences on arbitration law. Thaya is involved in the organisation of conferences in Asia and Europe on arbitration.
